An Important Day in History

Today is a very important day in history.  On this day in 1986, I was born! That’s right…Happy Birthday to me!  Today I’ll be sleeping in, recovering from the wine tour I took yesterday and celebrating the start of my 24th year with family, friends and football.  So, while I’m doing all of that, here’s a list of some other cool things that happened on this date in history.

1851 – William Lassell discovers Ariel and Umbriel, satellites of Uranus

1857 – The inaugural meeting of Sheffield F.C., the world’s first soccer club, is held in England

1861 – West Virginia votes to secede from Virginia

1901 – Annie Edison Taylor becomes the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

1931 – The George Washington Bridge is dedicated.

1945 – The United Nations is founded.

1951 – Six years after fighting has ended, President Truman declares the United States’ war with Germany is officially over.

1957 – French fashion designer, Chrisian Dior passes away while on holiday in Italy.

1962 – James Brown records Live at the Apollo.

1972 – Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson dies of a heart attack at his home in Stamford, CT.

1980 – American fashion designer, Zac Posen is born in New York City.

1992 – The Toronto Blue Jays win the first World Series for Canada with no actual Canadians on the team.

2003 – The supersonic Concorde makes its final commercial flight.

2005 – Rosa Parks passes away.
